About the project

Phaëton is a stage production based on the myth of the tragedy of the son of Phoebus Apollo, as told by Ovid (The Metamorphoses, II). Eager to emulate his father, Phaëthon was unable to control the sun chariot, causing droughts, fires, death, and the wrath of Jupiter, who, to save the Earth and its creatures, struck him with a thunderbolt, hurling him into the abyss from the sky.

The story is presented through dance and music; the dance incorporates the various elements of the narrative, from the despair of the animals, the drying of the rivers, the frenzy of the horses, to the fall and death of the protagonist. The music is based on a work by Lully and on improvisation.

The scene, movement, and dance, inspired by butō, are my creation . The music, performed by Pere Ros, features — in No. I, “Reflejo” — a chaconne from Jean Baptiste Lully’s opera Phaëton, followed by improvisations on the viola da gamba.

Presented at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Madrid.

The project was developed as a continuation of another work that used a white structure [created for me by Jasanzo] to create forms that evolve as one rotates.
