Butoh’s animist features are well known. Yet what does it mean to bring a spirit back to life? It is the act of giving form to an essential quality—a nature capable of generating its own world. In this performance, a metamorphosis unfolds into a yōkai of accumulation and control, along with the frustrated desire to escape it: a purely human yōkai.
